Searching and Browsing Content
Searching
and browsing is quick and simple, as KluwerPatentLaw has been organized into
the following specific main topic categories: Practice Tools, Books, and
Journals. Materials grouped within the Practice Tools category are further
grouped into the following sections: Manual IP Smart Charts™, Visser’s EPC
Smart Charts™, Patent Litigation Smart Charts™, Global Patent Litigation
Compare Jurisdictions, Manual IP Compare Jurisdictions, Software Patents
Worldwide Compare Jurisdictions, IP Legislations, Cross Reference Tables EPC,
and Organizations.
KluwerPatentLaw
also includes a News section, Kluwer-Patent-Blog, an Updates section that
contains the latest additions to KluwerPatentLaw, and the ability to subscribe
to News Alerts.

Subscribers will only be able to view documents within the
KluwerPatentLaw database after having logged in to the website. Customers with
IP-based access will be logged in to KluwerPatentLaw automatically.
1.
Find the Login link located in the upper right section of the home page.
The Login page will display.
2.
Enter your User ID and Password.
3.
Click the Login button.
4.
You are now
logged in to the KluwerPatentLaw application and can access all documents
contained within the database. Near the top-right of the page you will see the
username next to the Log off link.
Note:
KluwerPatentLaw may also be accessed through IRN/Intelliconnect.
You
are now logged out of the KluwerPatentLaw application.
The
Updates section lists materials added recently to KluwerPatentLaw.
The
News section lists materials added recently to KluwerPatentLaw.
The
News Alert service keeps you informed of the latest patent law developments,
including new laws and changing regulations relevant to KluwerPatentLaw.
You
may choose to receive your news via a bi-weekly News Alert newsletter delivered
to your inbox.
1. Click the SUBSCRIBE
button located in the News Alert section on the middle-right portion of the
KluwerPatentLaw home page. The register form for KluwerPatentLaw News Alerts
will display in a separate window.
2. Complete the form and
then click the Submit button.
Note: The newsletter includes the ability to unsubscribe.
When clicking the unsubscribe link in the newsletter, a webpage will display
with the option to unsubscribe or change the email address.
The
KluwerPatentBlog enables users to follow various authors and their comments.
KluwerPatentLaw is taxonomy driven, i.e.
all materials in the database are grouped into one or more predefined topic
categories which are browsable through the tree on the left hand side of your
screen. We distinguish
the following topic categories:
The Practice Tools Topic is divided into 9
subsections: Manual IP Smart Charts™, Visser’s EPC Smart Charts™, Patent
Litigation Smart Charts™, Global Patent Litigation Compare Jurisdictions,
Manual IP Compare Jurisdictions, Software Patents Worldwide Compare
Jurisdictions, IP Legislations, Cross Reference Tables EPC, and Organizations.
All of the subsections can be accessed from their respective links in the
Practice Tools section near the top middle of the home page and from the
Practice Tools tab on the top tab menu on all of the pages.
1. Select the Practice
Tools tab and then click the Manual IP Smart Charts™ link. The
Manual IP Smart Charts™ page will display in a separate window.
1. Select the main topic
you would like to browse. You may select one or all of the main topics.
Note: You may click the plus symbol
to expand the categories and view
the text types.
2. Click the Next
button located at the bottom left of the page. The page Step 2: Select a
jurisdiction will display.
3. Select a country or
countries.
Note: The countries are divided into alphabetical sections (i.e. A-C,
D-F, etc).
4. Click the Next
button. The page Step 3: Results will display.
5. Select either Chart View
or Matrix View from the Display As: dropdown menu to display your
results in Chart view or Matrix view.
Note: You may also select how recently you would like updates to be
highlighted.
6. The charts and matrices
can be printed, saved, or exported with ease. In addition, a link to the full
text of the relevant analysis, case law and/or legislation is provided.
1. Select the Practice
Tools tab and then click the Visser's EPC Smart Charts™ link. The
Visser’s EPC Smart Charts™ page will display in a separate window.
2. Select the main topic
you would like to browse. You may select one or all of the main topics.
Note: You may click the plus symbol
to expand the categories and view
the text types.
3. Click the Next
button located at the bottom left of the page. The page Step 2: Results will
display.
4. Select from the Updates
drop down menu how recent you would like the results to be highlighted.
5. The charts and matrices can
be printed, saved, or exported with ease. In addition, a link to the full text
of the relevant analysis, case law and/or legislation is provided.
1. Select the Practice
Tools tab and then click the Patent Litigation Smart Charts™ link.
The Patent Litigation Smart Charts™ page will display in a separate window.
2. Select the country you
would like to browse. You may select one or all of the countries.
3. Click the Next
button located at the bottom left of the page. The page Step 2: Select Topic(s)
will display.
4. Select the main topic
you would like to browse. You may select one or all of the main topics.
Note: You may click the plus symbol
to expand the categories and view
the text types.
5. Click the Next
button. The page Step 3: Results will display.
6. Select either Chart View
or Matrix View from the Display As: dropdown menu to display your
results in Chart view or Matrix view.

by clicking the checkbox next to the selected topic.

2. Click a document link to
view the selected document.

view the selected table. The selected cross reference table will display.
3. Click an article. The
article will display in a separate page.

Select the Practice Tools tab and
then click the Organizations link. The Organizations page will display.
2. Click a resource link to
display the selected organization.
The KluwerPatentLaw virtual library
includes a wealth of authoritative publications from the extensive
KluwerPatentLaw catalogue.
1. Click Books tab.
The Books page will display.
2. Sort the title list by Title,
Author, or Year.
3. Click a title link. The
selected title will display as a document list, providing page range, author
and title for all the documents related to the selected book.
4. Click a document link.
The selected document will display.
The KluwerPatentLaw virtual library also
includes issues of EPI information from 2006 to the present.
1. Click Journals from
the top tab menu. The Select Journals page will display with a list of volumes
for a variety of journals. You can collapse/expand the list of volumes by
clicking the minus/plus sign.
2. Click a volume link. The
selected volume will display with a list of issues.
3. Expand the issue you
would like to view by clicking the plus sign. The document list will display
for the selected issue. You can sort the document list by Issue or Page.
4. Click a document link.
The selected document will display.
The Search feature enables you to search
and refine results afterwards throughout all topics wherever you are using
KluwerPatentLaw. To refine your search beforehand, please use the advanced
search form to combine two or more search fields.
1. Type your term(s) in the
search text field.
Note: The Search field is located above the advanced search link on the
upper right part of the page.
2. Click the Find
button or press enter to perform your search. A search results list will
display. The search results are displayed and sorted in reverse chronological
order. Also, your search results are divided further over multiple tabs located
at the top of the list, representing the different document types and also by
different search results filters located on the left side of the page.
3. Click a document link.
The selected document will display.
The Advanced Search form includes a
variety of options for performing a customized, advanced search. The Advanced
Search page includes various free text search term fields, date
restrictors, check boxes, and drop down lists that allow you to further
customize your search. Also, next to each additional search option, excluding
the Free text field, is a drop down menu to the left with the options of and,
or, and not.
The Advanced search link is located near
the top-right part of each page below the quick search text field. By allowing
you to combine several search parameters, the Advanced Search form will make
your access to the KluwerPatentLaw materials much more targeted and your hit
lists more relevant.
The Advanced Search – General Search page
contains the following search fields:
1. Click the advanced
search link.
Note: The Advanced search link is located near the top-right part of
each page below the quick search text field.
2. Enter your search terms
in the Filtering Fields (Free text, Words in title, etc).
3. Click the Find
button or press enter to perform your search. A search results list will
display. The search results are displayed and sorted in reverse chronological
order. Also, your search results are divided further over multiple tabs located
at the top of the list, representing the different document types and also by
different search results filters located on the left side of the page.
4. Click a document link.
The selected document will display.
Once you have entered your search criteria
and processed your search, your search results list will display. At this
point, you will have the option to open a single document or to select multiple
documents to email or print. You will also have the option to narrow down the
displayed results by using the following:
Your search term will be highlighted once
you click a link to a selected analytical text or document.
When using an Asterisk (*) Wildcard, type
an asterisk (*) in place of a character in your search term to indicate that
any number of characters can be substituted in place of the asterisk.
For example, if you type novel* as
your search term, your results will include novels, novelty,
novelties, etc.
Use double quotes (" ") to define
a phrase rather than a simple collection of terms.

Some symbols cannot be used in any of the search
fields - they will cause the search to return an error message. These symbols mostly
comprise of non-English characters like:

Boolean operators are symbols or words
that are used to combine different kinds of searches within one field.
You can use the following Boolean
operators to refine your search term(s):
KluwerPatentLaw enables you to you to
email selected documents from your search results list.
1. Select one or multiple
documents by checking the check box next to each document that you want to
email.
2. Select Email
Selection from the Email Selection/Print Selection drop down menu.
3. Click the Go
button. The Email Content page will display.
4. Enter the recipient’s
email address in the Email recipient text field and your email address
in the Your Email text field.
5. Click the Send
button to email the documents to the entered email addresses.
Recipients will receive a header in their
email, not the whole document. Clicking the header will take the recipient back
to the specific document on KluwerPatentLaw. Note: Recipients of emailed
documents also need to be KluwerPatentLaw subscribers to be able to open the
documents sent to them.
Tip!
Multiple documents can be selected at one time. To select all the listed
documents, click the Select all check box.
Kluwer Patent Law enables you to print selected documents both from a document or search
results list and from individual documents.
Important! Please refrain from using the print icon in
your browser menu bar (ALT+R). Also, please refrain from choosing Print
(CTRL+P) from the File menu. Due to browser-related bugs, which cannot be
addressed by Kluwer Law International, this will not have the desired effect of
printing documents in full.
1. Select one or multiple documents by
checking the check box next to each document that you want to print.
2. Select Print Selected from the
Email Selected/Print Selected dropdown menu.
3. Click the Go button. The Print Preview page will display for the selected
document(s).
4. Go to ‘File’ > ‘Print Preview’ and then
chose ‘Print’ to print the document(s) as displayed in the Print Preview Page.
Tip! Multiple documents can be selected at one
time. To select all the listed documents, click the Select all on this page
checkbox.
1. Select and open the document of your
choice.
2. Click on the Printer icon. The Print Preview page will display for the selected
document.
3. Go to ‘File’ > ‘Print Preview’ and then
choose ‘Print’ to print the document as displayed in the Print Preview Page.
